The Client Goal
The City of Seattle’s Office of Film + Music was preparing for a debate at the 2013 Experience Music Project (EMP) Pop Conference, an annual music and arts conference. The subject of the debate was “Who’s Got the Best Music Scene? Seattle vs. Austin vs. Portland,” so the City of Seattle approached us to develop a visual communication piece that could help prove Seattle’s worth. The design, scaled for legibility on a large TV screen, would be presented to an auditorium of people who would vote on the winning city. It also needed to sync with the accompanying spoken presentation.
The Solution
We determined that 1 illustration-based poster, converted into a single slide for large-scale projection, would be best at conveying the true scope of Seattle’s music influence. In a dual purpose of utilizing the space most effectively and avoiding demeaning the other presentations, we decided along with the client to only discuss what makes Seattle great — not what makes it better than the others. The visual communication and its presentation ultimately helped convince the audience to elect Seattle as the winner.
