The Client Goal
GeekWire is a Seattle-based technology news site, reporting on all things startup, technology, and innovation in the Northwest and around the world. Each year, the GeekWire Awards celebrates the businesses that make Seattle a great tech hub. In the past, this event has primarily attracted startups, particularly due to the original event name “The Geekwire Startup Awards.” In 2014, Geekwire dropped the word “startup” to focus the awards on all of the great businesses in the Northwest. They came to us in search of a video that would both kick off the ceremony and help evangelize startups and seasoned companies alike.
In response to these goals, we chose to make Seattle’s tech companies the center of attention by celebrating the city’s history of innovation. Because this would be viewed on Seattle’s largest HD screen at the Experience Music Project, we also knew that we needed something visually stimulating that would hook people from the beginning. We experimented with animations in z-space, creating an “infinite zoom” effect that transports viewers through the past and into the future, passing by esteemed companies and figures in Seattle’s past. The motion graphic closes with a final shot on a collection of logos showcasing current Seattle startup talent. These techniques helped show the GeekWire Awards audience what makes the Seattle tech scene so vibrant, as well as its potential for the future.
