The Client Goal
The National Aquarium is in the difficult position of balancing fisheries management with the fishing industry’s harvest needs. Adding to this difficulty is the inherent uncertainty in fisheries science — uncertainties that have led to mistrust in fisheries management among many members of the industry. The National Aquarium needed to tell the story of fisheries management, and describe the science behind it, to the fishing industry, legislators, and the general public.
In order to explain a complex topic in simpler terms, we decided to compare fisheries management to a more general science everyone is familiar with. By using the analogy of uncertainty in weather forecasting, we’re able to show how fisheries managers make their decisions based on the best data available, working to maximize fishing yields while maintaining stock levels for future harvests. We developed a lighthearted art style to accompany this analogy, and an approachable narrator creates an opportunity for improved connection with the audience.
