The Client Goal
EPIX is a premium cable network owned by Paramount Pictures, Lionsgate, and MGM. In addition to streaming content from those studios, EPIX also produces original documentaries. To get audiences excited for the release of their upcoming documentary, “Deep Web,” EPIX approached us to develop an animated graphic that would educate their audience on the dense subject matter of the Silk Road, the dark web, and BitCoin, while bringing light to the gray line of privacy in the digital age.
A number of motion graphics exploring the dark web have already been created. A majority of these build their narrative around the fairly common metaphor of an iceberg — the surface web is the tip of the iceberg, while the dark web is everything below the surface. We chose to go a more abstract route, creating a minimalist illustration style that helps simplify the topic for a wider audience. A fluid animation style, coupled with somewhat somber music and narration, pulls the audience in to meet the goal of educating them and generating excitement for the upcoming documentary.
