The Client Goal
Business magazine Forbes was immersed in a campaign to celebrate their centennial. As part of this initiative, they wanted an interactive timeline that aligned the past 100 years of the S&P Index with other key moments in history (financial, economic, and otherwise). The timeline would be developed in partnership with BNY Mellon Wealth Management and needed to appeal to business owners and entrepreneurs, especially those in financial sectors. The ultimate goal was to improve click-through rates on Forbes’ BrandVoice microsite.
The Solution
We created an interactive timeline usable on both desktop and mobile to meet users on whatever device they had. The functionality allows users to either click on the graph to reach a specific decade, or scroll down to view all of the information chronologically. The option to choose how to interact with the timeline improves usability. The chart background fills to represent the years that are “in the past” relative to the timeframe the user is currently viewing. Icons are used to represent the subject of each event, while a bold number displays the S&P’s closing price on each of the listed days. The timeline lives on its own page at Forbes’ BrandVoice site.
