The Client Goal
With the commitment to improving the health and well-being of all infants through young adults, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) was looking to engage and educate the public about disease outbreaks and child immunizations. The AAP had compiled reports with fresh data and needed a means of presenting the material in a compact, visually driven way to support their communication and outreach goals.
The Solution
The AAP knew that a map would provide a helpful format for presenting 50 states’ worth of data. We wanted to make sure that the information was clear, easily accessible, and available with different degrees of detail — not to mention mobile friendly. By structuring an interactive map with individual pages for each state, we’d be able to construct a state-focused approach that broke the data sets into helpful morsels. A hover state on the desktop version offered quick snapshots of a state’s immunization records, and drop-down menus provided parallel access on mobile. Across all states and formats, we honed in on a templated approach to structuring the content, helping advance the map’s visual communication by making room for consistent icon use and data visualizations.
