The Client Goal
Number Sleuth came to us in 2012 looking for a science-based interactive experience that would be widely shared online. They also needed the experience to be embeddable and to contain analytics for full insight into its reach.
Considering Number Sleuth’s goals and the numerous possibilities, we decided to create an exploration of the universe by size. The interactive design begins at the largest aspect of the observable universe and allows users to zoom down to the smallest. You can sort by size or by type (for example, you can choose to focus only on mammals or galaxies) as you zoom further in, creating a unique experience that lets users see the universe in new ways. Since Number Sleuth wanted an embeddable experience, we employed Flash — which was still an acceptable platform at the time — to create a widget that would meet that requirement. In its first week, this interactive content received over 1 million views across more than 300 countries. It was also shared on nationalgeographic.com and other notable sites.
