The Client Goal
Launched at the end of 2017, Spectacle Magazine is a digital and print collection of speculative fiction. They reached out to us prior to the debut of their inaugural issue, inquiring about creating a 2-page infographic spread for the magazine. Not having a set topic in mind, they looked to us to develop a topic of our choosing, so long as it related to speculative fiction and would be an engaging visual piece for their readers, who are primarily sci-fi/fantasy fans. The style and fonts needed to fit cohesively with the rest of the magazine, the layout of which was already in the works when our infographic began. It also had to work in both print and digital formats, accounting for bleeds on the print version.
The Solution
After ideating and vetting potential topics with Spectacle, we embarked on creating a piece about the audiobook version of “Lincoln in the Bardo” by George Sanders. The central illustration features key characters and sets the scene for the story’s setting: a graveyard at night. It identifies the characters at play and dissects their narrations in the piece, chapter by chapter. The result is an illustration-driven infographic with a deep, rich aesthetic to catch readers’ eyes amidst a collection of captivating fiction. It lives in Spectacle’s inaugural issue and was also tweeted out by the magazine.
