The Client Goal
The Red Bull Music Academy, a world-traveling series of music workshops and festivals, came to us looking for unique content for RBMA Daily, their online magazine. The RBMA Daily audience is incredibly knowledgeable and hungry for compelling stories about musicians outside the mainstream. While long-form essays comprise much of the magazine’s output, the goal here was to create something more visual. The driving question then became, “What aspect of underground music would best lend itself to infographic format?”
In order to turn music into numbers (which could then be visualized), we decided on the topic of speed drumming — specifically how some of metal’s most accomplished percussionists stacked up against the all-time greats. We proposed an approach that would not only highlight each drummer’s speed (total number of hits), but their style, as well (tom hits vs. snare hits, etc.). The artistic nature of the target audience led us to our specific selections of gradients, fonts, colors, and line art illustrations.
